Church. 1869, possibly incorporating some earlier fabric. Rubble, mainly
coursed, stone slate roof. 3-storey west tower, nave and chancel in one of
4 external and 6 internal bays, with south porch. Tower: uncoursed rubble,
possibly of earlier date. Quoins. Stepped angle buttresses. Second floor
2-light pointed-arched belfry opening with Y-tracery and hoodmould. String
and battlemented parapet. Porch: quoined. Pointed-arched opening with
continuous chamfer and hoodmould. Shaped kneeler and coping with cross to
gable. Inner doorway, pointed-arched with continuous chamfer. Nave:
plinth. Bays divided by stepped buttresses. Two 2-light pointed-arched
windows with Y-tracery and hoodmoulds; lancet window with hoodmould to
right. Gutter brackets. Shaped kneeler, ashlar coping and gable cross to
right. East end: watershot masonry. 3-light window with intersecting
tracery and hoodmould. North side: 3 double-chamfered lancet windows.
Between first and second windows, circular ashlar eaves chimney, rubble
eaves chimney at right end. Tower, north side: steps up to ringing chamber
doorway (being altered at time of resurvey); first-floor louvred bow-topped
opening in ashlar surround. Tower, west side: ground-floor single-light
bow-topped window in ashlar surround; 2-light belfry opening as on south
side, bricked up at time of resurvey. Interior: chancel in fifth bay,
sanctuary in sixth bay, separated by round sub-arch to king-post roof truss.
King-post roof trusses. Round arch to tower. Established c1530 as a chapel
of ease to be served by the Premonstratensian canons of Coverham Abbey.
