Tombstone. c1771. Ashlar sandstone. Stone with rounded centre top and
incised edge. Inscription commemorates two brothers, William and Joseph
Rookby, who were drowned in Clapgate Beck on 16 November 1771 aged 37 and 33
respectively. The item is included for historical interest as the River
Swale and its tributaries rise very swiftly after isolated storms, and down
the centuries have tragically claimed many lives.
