Roman Catholic Chapel, house, and cottage now two houses. C14,
C16, altered C18, late C19 and 1950s. Rubble stone, tiled roof
with coped verges to main range, C16 range projecting to front is
partly timber-framed stone slate roof, stone stacks. Main chapel
and house range under one roof to east with 4-bay C16 range on
different axis to west. Two-storey, 5-window main front facing
south. Former chapel to right has three single leaded windows to
ground floor, three pointed 2-light leaded windows with Y-tracery
over, pair to right are stone, left one is wooden, domestic part of
range to left has planked door and 6-light 1950s mullioned casement
to ground floor, 4-light and 3-light 1950s steel leaded casements
to first floor. Hipped attic dormer and C20 bellcote with pointed
openings to roof, inserted stack to right gable end, coped verge
with cross finial. Right return has blocked opening with moulded
pointed arch, possibly C14. Rear of this range has C18 pointed 2-
light window with Y-tracery to left and C14 cusped lancet to right,
projecting wing has C20 lean-to stone porch to side with reset
corbel and fragment of saddleback coping over, north gable has C20
casements and round-arched blocked opening, to right of wing main
range continues with lateral gabled stack and C20 two-storey
addition. C16 range to west, partly Bonham Cottage has original
front facing north with rendered first floor timber-framed jetty
over rubble stone ground floor; lean-to porch with plank door to
left, 3-light casement and C16 arched light to right. Jetty on
timber brackets with stone corbels has scalloped plaster to lower
edge; single-light casement, 2-light and fixed light. South-
facing rear of this range has lean-to extensions attached to ground
floor, 4-light and 2-light first floor casements, east gable end
has coped verge and large stone stack with offsets.
Interior considerably remodelled 1950s. Former chapel has rebuilt
roof and inserted stack and inserted west gallery with arms of
Stourton family, piscina survives on north wall, in cupboard at
west end. Domestic part of main range has late C16 plaster ceiling
with curvilinear thin ribs and moulded pellets, probably reset,
first floor has early C19 six-panelled doors and grey marble
fireplace surround with paterae, collar truss roof. Three bays of
C16 range are Bonham Cottage, one bay in Bonham House; the
interior has exposed jetty within lean-to on south side. Deep
chamfered beams with stepped stops to compartmental ceiling in west
room, open fireplace with chamfered lintel on stone jambs. Cross
frame trusses exposed in first floor, tie-beam and braces with
chamfered soffits, jowled main posts. Lords of Stourton lived
here from the C14 and worshipped in the chapel, the chapel was
closed for worship during 1940s and the whole remodelled by the
22nd baron of Stourton.
