6/44 Edward Dolling monument,
c.10 m east of north east
corner of Church of St
Michael
GV II
Headstone. 1737, to Edward Dolling. Limestone. Square slab to worn decorative
top with cherub's head and leaf scrolls. Edward Dolling, it records, '.... Dyed
of ve Smallpox which he designedly took Sept 6 1737 Aged 21 years' followed by
four lines of suitable verse, all inscribed in local mason's cursive script.
This records an early and unsuccessful attempt at inoculation, which was used
often with success, until Edward Jenner's discovery of a more certain working
method in 1796. In addition to its visual qualities the monument therefore has
historical interest.
