5/40 Drifthouse north of
Common House Farmhouse

GV II

Small drifthouse, mid C17, Brick nogged timber framing on high stone plinth, roof
partly of old slates, partly corrugated metal sheeting. Close studding with middle
rail, 7 panels - opening - 7 panels. Gable-ends in brickwork. Softwood boarded
doors on strap hinges against corners both ends of building. Side walls to central
passage timber framed with long passing braces, supporting collar-trusses with 3 or
4 vertical struts and two lines of purlins. Original roof of large slates with
sandstone ridge. The rear opening now filled with a wall of unjointed rubble
masonry. There is a pitch hole high up in the west wall of the covered passage.
