19/40 The Limes
GV II
House. Late C16, extended by one bay at the rear C18, and with addition of C19 to the re-entrant angle. Timber-framed, part plaster rendered and part brick cased. C18 north end wall of coursed limestone on plinth with brick to gable. Plain tiled roof, hipped at the angle between front and rear ranges. Ridge stack of red brick between original house and C18 addition, and north end stack. Original house of L-plan. Two storeys, with the first floor jet tied to the front. First floor framing part exposed. Shaped wall bracing, and modern casing to the jetty beam. First floor has hung sashes. Original doorway in moulded architrave and four centred Tudor arch in square head with foliate carving to the spandrels. The rear wing is also of two storeys. Late C18-early C19. Two storey canted bay to the south wall. In C18 the bay at the west end was added and the chimney stack inserted. Two storeys. West end wall of brick. The north end wall of the main range was rebuilt in C18 when the chimney stack was inserted. Inside: the front range has broad stop chamfered ceiling main beams. Structurally each of the ranges is of two bays. The tie beams have jowled heads but are not braced.
