Nursing Home, former house. Dated 1855. Rock-faced coursed pennant stone with
freestone dressings, concrete tile roof and ashlar stacks. Neo-Jacobean style.
South east entrance front of 2 storeys, 3 bays: central bay half the width of
outer 2 bays. All windows are 2-light casements with chamfered stone mullions
and transoms, those on 1st floor with segmental-headed strainer arches. Central
advanced porch with pointed-arched entrance under hoodmould with figure stops and
shaped gable with pierced pyramid finial. Family crest and datestone beneath
gable. 1st floor string course, stepped ogee and curvilinear coped gables with
pierced, pyramid finials. Further, larger family crest and motto above upper
central window. Recessed quatrefoil rosettes in flanking gables. South-west
front with 3 bays through 2 floors, the central bay canted. Ground floor windows
are tripartite with a pointed-arched central panel above 3-light chamfered stone
mullions and transoms. Central bay originally 1 storey, now has upper extension
with a cusped lozenge parapet and 4 corner carved faces. Tall ashlar stacks on
plinths set in ranges of 6 on the diagonal. Interior. Several ribbed and
bossed ceilings. Canted staircase window has stained glass and above, fine
carved wooden tracery. (Drawings in RIBA).
