10/57 Former Stables, Ox House and
Barn, 80 yards west of
G.V. Castle Farmhouse

Farmhouse, thought to be a longhouse; altered to stables and an ox-house; now
sometimes used as a museum. C16, altered. Rubble; corrugated iron roof over
remains of thatch which is fastened by stalks of old-man's-beard and bindweed.
2 storeys. Hall and inner room to west; cross passage (now blocked) behind
hall stack; byre to east; the stable wing to the south-east is a later
addition. The former windows and doorways are blocked: two C19 plank doors on
east gable end and door to south elevation. Interior: hall fireplace has
chamfered 4-centred wooden lintel on stone jambs and heavily moulded mantelshelf;
flagged and cobbled floor with draainage channels to the byre end; 5 trusses, tie
and collar beams (some members removed) with 3 upper crucks, tenoned and
trenched purlins; re-used cruck members in east wing.
