House. Circa late C16 or early C17, remodelled and extended in early C18
(datestone 1708). Stuccoed and painted stone rubble. Pantile roofs with
hipped and gabled ends with stone coping. Brick axial and gable end stacks.
Plan: L-shaped plan. What remains of the late C16 or early C17 house was
relegated to a rear (west) service wing when in the early C18 a new L-shaped
block was added to the east end (now front) containing the principal front
room with entrance hall to right, leading to stairwell behind the front room.
In the C20 an extension was built in the rear left hand angle.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 3-bay early C18 east block with moulded stone parapet
cornice which breaks forward over corner pilasters. 12-pane sashes on first
floor and 2 tall round-headed sashes on ground floor with radiating glazing
bars, small imposts and keyblocks. Doorway on right with early C19 panelled
and glazed door, now enclosed in late C19 conservatory built against a garden
wall adjoining right (north east) corner of house. North elevation has C19
2-storey bay to left of centre with 4-centred arch lights on ground floor with
diamond panes; similar window on right in wide gabled projection on side of
rear wing. The south side of rear wing has 12-pane sashes and C20 extension
in angle with front range to right, with reset datestone in gable inscribed V
over RS 1708 and with cornice above.
Exterior: Principal front room has good early C18 fielded panelling with
moulded cornice, dado, window shutters and round arched china cupboard with
gadrooned canopy with shell, keyblock and shaped shelves; the chimneypiece is
C20 replacement. Entrance hall has early C19 moulded plaster cornice and
early C19 staircase with stick balusters, moulded newels and mahogany
handrail. Bolection moulded 2-panel door to WC off hall. Some C18 2-panel
doors on first floor. Rear wing ground floor room has large rebuilt
fireplace, deeply chamfered cross-beam with hollow step stops and early C19
dresser on end wall. Circa early C18 roof over rear wing has 2 trusses with
collars halved and lapped and tenoned purlins.
