Stables circa 1756-1778 by Capability Brown; whose master plan for Burghley
depicts the stables and is dated 1756 and the final account is dated 1779.
Gothic range of stables. Ashlar with Collyweston stone hipped roof behind
battlements. Two storeys. Nine bay ranges on 3 sides of courtyard. The
centre bays slightly advanced with pointed arch carriageways. Two-light window
with 4 centred arch lights and drip moulds. Moulded string course at floor
level. Including forecourt railings on stone plinth with square ashlar gate
piers at centre with cast iron lamp standards.
Servants wing connecting stables with house, C17, 2 storey and attic range,
mullion/transom windows and hipped dormers with arched gateway to yard to
the north. Later adjoining ancillary wings, the service wings, C17 and later,
including brewery and porters lodge around a courtyard.
