(West Side)
11/17 No. 78
II
House, now a shop and dwelling, mid C16, with two C16-C17
additions at the rear. Timber-frame originally exposed but now
with the front wall cased in brick and painted. Steeply
pitched, pantiled roof with original red brick ridge stack with
grouped shafts on square base. Plan of single range, with lobby
entry. Two storeys with the first floor originally jettied, now
underbuilt in brick. The fenestration is all C19 or C20 but the
doorway is in its original location opposite the stack. At the
rear at the North end, there is a small gabled wing, late C16 or
early C17, and possibly a stair turret and, at the South end, a
timber-framed service wing addition. Inside, the hall and
parlour have leaf foliage moulding to the main beams and middle
rail. The partition wall between the service end and hall has
been removed. Recent restoration has revealed a three-light
window with hollow and roll moulded mullions. A brick stack was
inserted into the smoke bay in the late C16 or early C17.
