16/146 Barn, at Downing
Farm
II
Barn, of c1600 with the roof of the aisle raised, possibly in C19. Timber-
framed, and weatherboarded with roof hipped at the right hand and forming a
gablet at the apex. The roof was originally thatched and has recently (c.1983)
been re-roofed with buff pantiles. There were possibly two original cartway
openings in the North wall, one now blocked. Of seven bays and single aisled.
Inside the arcade posts have jowled heads and cambered tie beams and cranked
bracing from posts to tie beams. There is bracing from the aisle ties to the
arcade posts. The roof is of Queen post construction with collars and clasped
through purlins.
