Description

TL 57 SE WICKEN POND GREEN
(North Side)

8/103 No. 7

GV II

Cottage, late C15, of original open hall plan with floored
service end to right hand and parlour to left hand. In C17 the
cottage was extended to right hand and a chimney stack and floor
inserted into the open hall converting the house to one of lobby
entry plan. Timber frame, plaster rendered with thatched roof
of reed with a ridge stack of grouped shafts on a square base.
One storey and attics. Three later gabled dormers and four
windows, all C20. The doorway to the lobby entry is now blocked
and the present entry is possibly near or close to the site of
the C15 entry to the through passage. Inside the timber framing
is visible in the original floored service end. The ceiling is
C15 and of joists of large scantling laid flat and lodged on a
rail in the walls, and tenoned to a spine beam. The joists are
unmoulded, and the spine beam is stop chamfered and is supported
on prick posts which form part of partition wall between service
bay and open hall, and gable end of original house.
