Farmhouse. Possibly with C17 origins, extended in C18 and in early C19. Stone
rubble and cob, partly rendered. Bitumen coated rag and scantle slate roofs; west
range with gable ends and brick end stacks; north range with hipped end on west,
brick stack in gable end on east and further extended on east by east wing with lower
slate roof with hipped ends. South range with hipped roof.
Plan considerably altered and original arrangement uncertain. West range possibly
circa C17; two room and cross or through passage plan heated by end stacks. South
range possibly contemporary forming wing of one room plan to rear of right hand room
of west range. In circa mid C18 north range added forming heated wing of one room
plan to rear of left hand room of west range. In circa late C18 or early C19 the
east range was added with a two room and through passage plan, the north room (on
right) heated by an axial stack adjoining the earlier gable end stack of the north
wing. Probably contemporary with this addition the interior was largely remodelled;
the house was reorientated with the entrance on the east leading into a cross passage
which provided access to the rooms in the north west and south ranges and to the
stair which was inserted on the north east. A second entrance in the south range
joins the passage at right angles.
Two storeys. East front faces the courtyard enclosed by the outbuildings on the east
and south (qv outbuildings 5-10m to east and south east). Symmetrical three window
front with early C19 2-light casements. Central entrance with C19 door in C19
rendered gabled porch. First floor with central window blocked and resited circa C15
catacleuse stone window positioned infront. Symmetrical 3-window west elevation
refenestrated in late C20 and roof raised in circa late C19. North elevation with
C19 entrance door with margin glazing bars. Numerous straight joints in south
elevation and stair window with intersecting glazing bars.
Interior: circa mid to late C18 chimney-piece in north range decorated with carvings
of vine leaves, sheaves of corn, acanthus leaf capitals and pastoral scene. 1840's
chimney-piece and dado rail in south room of west range. Circa late C18 or early C19
stair on south west with turned balusters, ramped rail and closed string and dado
rail on wall opposite. Coved plaster ceiling in bedroom of north wing. Circa C18
roof structure in west range and south wing with several reused chamfered principals
and collars.
