House, C16, altered in C19, extended in C20. Timber framed, mainly clad with
yellow stock bricks, stretcher bond, with some roughcast rendering, roofed with
C19 red clay tiles. Hall block of 3 bays aligned approx. E-W, aspect S, single-
storey with attics, with chimney stack in E part of W bay, N of axis, and an
axial chimney stack at E end. 2-storey crosswing at W end, with roof hipped
to N, and chimney stack near middle of W side. 2-storey porch at junction of
hall block and crosswing, C19. C20 conservatories to W and E, small lean-to
extension to E, also C20. Lean-to extension to N in red brick, C19. Ground
floor, glazed door under bracketed hood, C20, 2 bays each with 2 double-hung
sash windows of 4 lights, C19/20, and one similar window. First floor, 3 C19/20
casement windows, and one more in gabled dormer. In crosswing, jowled posts,
axial beams plain chamfered with concave and bar stops, arched braces to central
tiebeam, queen strut roof. The studded N end of the crosswing is visible in
an outhouse to the rear. No framing exposed in hall block. This unusual house
retains the form and structure of a typical C16 farmhouse, with cross-entry
intact, chimney stack just off the line to heat the original hall, dormer window
to light the upper floor, 2-storey crosswing with lower storey of more than
usual height, but given a C19 appearance by the overall cladding of brick and
roughcast render, and the plastered interior finish. The only wholly C19
feature is the 2-storeyed porch, and this may have replaced a similar timber
structure.
