Part of a C16 house, extended in C20. Timber framed, mostly weatherboarded,
part plastered, roof thatched. 2 bays aligned E-W with internal chimney stack
at W gable. Single storey flat-roofed extension to W, large extension to SE
with link between. Door and all windows C20. Framing exposed internally.
Jowled posts at corners. Heavy tension bracing to E corner posts, halved inside
studs. Original partition between bays of heavy studs at ground floor level,
but apparently no original partition above. No central tiebeam, arch-braced
collar truss. Original floor of square-section common joists arranged axially
in E bay, similar floor in W bay but apparently inserted after original
construction, some original floorboards in both bays. The binding joist at
the W end is chamfered and stopped on both sides, indicating that there has
been a third bay to the W of the existing building. This curious building does
not correspond with known types. The framing is heavy and of high quality,
better than would be expected in a cottage, but the accommodation, even with
a third bay, was always small.
