GV II

House. C.1500 or earlier, altered in C16 and early C19. Partly timber framed
and plastered, partly of red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red
clay tiles. Hall range of 3 bays facing SE, with late C16 axial stack in middle
bay, and early C19 crosswing at right end with 2 end stacks, forming an
irregular T-plan. Single-storey lean-to extension in W angle and single-storey
extension to NW of hall range, both C19. C20 lean-to conservatory/porch in S
angle. Hall range of one storey with attics, crosswing of 2 storeys. SE
elevation, 2 C19 casements, one early C20 bay of casements, 3 C19 casements in
gabled dormers. Half-glazed door. NE (garden) elevation, one early C19 sash of
16 lights, one early C20 bay of casements, and on first floor, one similar sash,
one C20 reproduction, and one early C19 sash of 12 lights. Central 6-panel door
with top panels glazed, and fanlight with cast iron radial tracery, early C19.
In the SW gable end, on the upper storey, two 2-light windows each with one
wrought iron casement, diamond leading, and some early glass, one late C19, the
other late C18. The hall range has jowled posts, heavy studding, and an
inserted floor, of which the transverse beam is moulded on one side only, and
the joists of horizontal section and moulded. All have unusual chip-carved
stops. Some of the floorboards are original. The roof is of crownpost
construction, with axial braces (some severed), smoke-blackened. RCHM 12.
