House. C16 and C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay
tiles. Main range of 3 bays facing SW, C16 or earlier, with late C16 inserted
stack on left side of right bay. C18 crosswing to right with central stack,
extending to rear and forming an L-plan. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 3 early C19
sashes of 16 lights. First floor, 2 late C18/early C19 single-hung sashes of 12
lights, 2 early C19 double-hung sashes of 16 lights. Many panes of crown glass.
Early C19 6-panel door, the top 2 panels glazed, in simple reeded doorcase with
shallow hood on profiled brackets. Roof of main range half-hipped at left end,
crosswing fully hipped. C17 sprockets. The main range originally comprised a
service bay to left and a 2-bay hall, in which a late C16 floor and axial stack
have been inserted. This floor has 2 chamfered longitudinal beams with lamb's
tongue stops, jointed into a chamfered transverse beam against the stack, the
joists (plastered to the soffits) supported on pegged clamps. The fact that the
floor beams are not supported by the stack indicates the former presence of a
timber framed chimney, in the same position as the stack. The stack comprises a
large wood-burning hearth facing to left, sealed, leaving the cross-entry of the
original hall house unobstructed. Jowled posts. Walls raised approx. 1.30
metres in the C17, and all internal tiebeams removed. Plaster covers most of
the frame. The C18 crosswing replaces the original parlour/solar bay.
