Description

TL 8422-8522 COGGESHALL CHURCH STREET
(south-east side)

9/67 No. 56 (Clevedon)
31.10.66

GV II

House. C16, altered in C18/early C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red plain tiles and slate. 2 bays facing NW, with C19 stack at each
end, 2 storeys. Early C19 extension of one storey with attics to left. C19
single-storey wing to rear, and C19 2-storey lean-to extension to right of it.
Main block, ground floor, 2 C18/early C19 sashes of 12 lights. First floor, 2
early C19 sashes of 3+6 lights, with some crown glass. Off-centre half-glazed
4-panel door in early C19 doorcase with heavily reeded architrave and paterae,
panelled jambs and soffit, and moulded flat canopy. Moulded cornice, plain
parapet, roof tiled. Left extension, one early C19 sash of 16 lights on each
floor, with some crown glass. Half-glazed 4-panel door, lower panels flush,
low-pitched roof of slate. The rear elevation has on the ground floor one early
C19 sash of 16 lights and an early C19 half-glazed door, and on the first floor
2 early C19 sashes of 3+6 lights. The depth of the doorcase probably indicates
an underbuilt jetty. This door opens into a room with a moulded axial beam, a
C20 grate, and an inserted partition to the rear, the remainder plastered or
papered. To rear of it is an early C19 1 1/2 flight stair with wreathed handrail,
stick balusters encircling a cast iron newel, and scrolled tread ends. The
right ground-floor room has a boxed axial beam, a C20 grate and surround in C18
style, and only the rear girt exposed. On the first floor the studded wall
between the bays is exposed on both sides, with trenched 'Suffolk' braces and
jowled posts; approximately 1.50 metres of the front end of the tiebeam has been
renewed. 2 blocked C19 grates, altered to cupboards. Near the front of the
right wall is a blocked original window with shutter groove above. Early C19
semi-elliptical arches lead through the central wall and the wall into the left
extension. Roof of main block rebuilt in C19. The left extension has a C20
grate on the ground floor; in a cupboard on the first floor is an original rack
of 5 turned pegs for hanging clothing.
