House. Circa 1580, altered in C18 and C20. Timber framed, plastered and
weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 3 bays aligned approx.
NW-SE, with original external stack to NE of SE bay, and C18 external stack to
SW of NW bay. C18 lean-to extension along remainder of SW elevation, almost
forming a catslide with the main roof. 2 storeys and unlit attic. NE
elevation, 2-window range of C2O casements, C20 door. All other windows are C20
casements. Plain boarded door to SW. To SE the main building is jettied, with
an exposed bressumer and one scrolled bracket, the remainder covered. Jowled
posts, heavy studding. Original studded partition on both floors between NW bay
and the remainder, with inserted stair immediately to SE of it. Chamfered
binding beam with lamb's tongue stops between other bays; plain joists of
approximately square section jointed to it with soffit tenons and diminished
haunches. NW bay ceiled. C20 grates in both wood-burning hearths. On the
first floor there is some evidence of a former oriel over the jetty, and in the
SW wall is an original window blocked by the added stack, complete with 2 ovolo
mullions. Rebated hardwood floorboards. In the NW gable is a blocked original
window with 2 diamond mortices. Floored attic. Clasped purlin roof with
straight wind-bracing. This appears to be the crosswing of a hall house which
formerly extended to the NE or SW.
