House. C17, extended in C18 and C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red plain tiles; wing to rear left mainly weatherboarded, roofed with
red clay pantiles. 3-bay main range facing E, with external stack to right
(shared with no. 7). C18 one-bay wing to rear right, and lean-to conservatory
beyond. One storey with attics. Early C19 wing to rear left with stack at the
junction and another axial stack, 2 storeys. 2 C20 casements with diamond
leading, and 2 more in C20 large gabled dormers. Early C20 half-glazed door in
recessed porch, and C20 gabled canopy on brackets. In the right elevation of
the left rear wing, on the first floor, are 3 C19 horizontal sashes of 12
lights, and 2 fixed lights with handmade glass. Over the right ground-floor
room one binding beam is comprised of re-used timber from a medieval building,
dovetailed for a former jetty. Chamfered axial bridging beams with lamb's
tongue stops, plain joists of vertical section. Wood-burning hearth at right,
faced with C20 brick. Corner hearth at left, with C20 grate. In right upper
room, exposed studding in gable with window blocked by external stack. The left
rear wing has many smoke-blackened rafters from a medieval hall, re-used with a
ridge construction in the early C19.
