Description

BURES HAMLET WATER LANE
TL 9034
(north side)
5/53 Barn approx. 35 metres
north of Secretaries
Farmhouse
GV II
Water Lane is wrongly shown on the O.S. map as Brook Street. Barn. C17,
altered in early C19. Timber framed, weatherboarded, base walls of red brick,
roofed with slate. 5 bays aligned approx. N-S, with midstrey to W. Open shed
in SW angle with hipped slate roof. Low-pitched roofs, with large louvred
lantern at middle of ridge. Jowled posts, heavy studding, primary bracing in
walls, straight braces to tiebeams, fully pegged construction in hardwood to
wallplate level. Roofs rebuilt in softwood in early C19, with ridge-pieces, for
the low pitch of slate. The barn is shown in plan on an estate map of 1796 by
John Kingsbury, in the possession of the owner. The single-storey range to the
W which has been altered to residential use is of less historical interest.
