Description

SO 61 SE NEWNHAM CHURCH ROAD
(east side)
2/4
Quay Warehouses (for-
9.6.82 merly listed under Back
Street)

- II

Barn, warehouse. Mid C18; possibly c.1755 (VCH) L-shaped block of which the
southerly range is the older. Mostly timber-framed of typical C18 box frame
type infilled mainly with brick, but also in part black slag block (waste from
local glass furnace); plain tile roofs, south range three storeys, ground storey
with opening, now blocked, formerly giving direct access to the quay. Various
small openings with evidence of later alterations; roof hipped at river end,
part cat-slide to rear wing. Interior: timber construction, little altered.
Important historically as a relic of Newnham's great period as a Forest of
Dean coalport, and only remaining warehouses directly on quay. ( See also VCH:
Gloucestershire, Vol X.)
