House. 1817 by John Dobson for Captain Dutton; later C19 additions. Sandstone
ashlar with plinth; roof of Welsh slate and small graduated slates. H-plan.
2 storeys, lO irregular bays x 3 wide bays. Entrance wing breaking forward at
right has tetrastyle Roman Doric porch, with late C19 half-glazed door at left
and sash window at right; later 2-bay left wing breaking forward, and central
5-window section, have sash windows, all plain with flat stone lintels; floor
and sill bands, eaves gutter cornice. Hipped low-pitched roofs have corniced
ashlar chimneys. High dome with spiked railings on conical roof in entrance
wing. Right return has central bow with 2 sashes and left curved glazed door
to octagonal arcaded conservatory; rear has similar bow with half-conical _
roof and lead ball finial. Interior shows round domed stairwell with iron
balustrade, and wreathed handrail to cantilevered circular stair; high-
quality marble chimney pieces with cast-iron grates; architraves to 8-panelled
doors; Greek-key and egg-and-dart stucco ceiling mouldings; rear right room
has classical window case and similar alcove, lugged architrave to door,
modillioned stucco cornice. Historical note: originally known as Villa Real,
