Remains of Bindon
Abbey
I
Remains of Cistercian Abbey, founded in 1149 at Little Bindon, West Lulworth (q.v.)
and moved to the present site in 1172. The Abbey was erected in the late C12-mid
C13. Dissolved in 1539, and largely demolished - materials being used in the
construction of "Bindon Abbey" and work to Lulworth Castle.
The Church consisted of a nave with north and south aisles, crossing, transepts with
eastern chapels, and square-ended presbytery. South of this was the cloister, with
domestic buildings of the abbey around it. The foundations of much of the abbey
survive, with the lower parts of the walls. At the west end of the church the walls
stand some 25 ft high, but elsewhere little remains above 8 ft. For full
description see RCHM, Dorset Vol. 11, p404.
The ruins very overgrown and in poor repair.
RCHM Monument 3. Scheduled Ancient Monument.
