Stables and mares' foaling boxes. 1917. MacDonald Gill in association with
Halsey Ricardo for Sir Ernest Debenham's model dairy farm. Brick and concrete
block walls, hipped and gabled roofs with diamond set slates. Enclosed rectan-
gular stable yard with canted angles at each corner. Externally, against the
south wall, a range of mares'foaling boxes with canted angles on the north side at
either end. Stable yard: main entry through the south west canted angle. A range
of horse boxes on the north side and part of east and west sides with a continuous
feeding passage between boxes and the yard wall entered at either end and through
timber double doors in the north east and north west canted angles. A shallow
vented gable above both angles with tumbled brick copings and kneelers. Partition
walls between boxes have vertical board dados. Range of mares' foaling boxes:
colonnade of ten bays facing south: circular pre-cast concrete columns on simple
chamfered concrete bases with square imposts of 5 corbelled tile courses support-
ing timber bressumers and principal beams of collar tie roof trusses. 3 bays of
the colonnade infilled later with concrete block walls each with a large timber
framed opening with vertical timber slats. Tiled floors. Continuous feeding
trough at rear of range between the inner brick piers and the north wall. The
west end of the range is now roofless.
