of Brownsea Castle

Covered pier, extending south-east from the walled garden at Brownsea Castle
(q.v.) mid C19. Main projecting section has brick walls, battlemented,and
glazed roof. This contains a number of C16 and C17 carved stone panels
imported from Venice in mid-C19. Terminal structure abutting jetty has
plastered walls and flat roof with battlemented parapet. Main range single-
storeyed, flanked by octagonal turrets of 3 stages at each end. In Victorian
Tudor style. Central 4-centred arched doorway under hoodmould, surmounted
by carving of Lion of Saint Mark. Each side of doorway a mullioned window
with hoodmould. At each end, below turret, a 4-centred arched doorway with
hoodmould. Turrets have blocked 4-centred arched windows in each stage and
battlemented parapets. A National Trust property. RCHM Monument 3 (Dorset
Vol. II).
