A late C14 first floor hall house - possibly originally a hunting lodge,
enlarged and altered circa 1600. Ironstone walls, gabled tiled roof with
stone eaves courses, brick end stacks. Two storeys and attic. Lean-to rear
extension circa 1600 of brick under catslide roof, with large brick stack.
Ground floor - original undercroft, of two rooms with central cross-passage.
First floor contains hall - originally open to roof, ceiled over circa 1600 -
and solar. Main elevation has central doorway with traces of arch. Ground
floor has two modern casements. First floor has two 2-light traceried windows -
mullions removed to take modern casements. One single-light C14 window and a
small window lighting a former newel stair. Internally, ground floor has timber-
framed partitions and large chamfered ceiling beams. Hall on first floor has a
C14 fireplace and a further C14 window in rear wall - now blocked. C14 panelled
partition originally between hall and solar - now reset. Present partition to
solar made up of C18 panelling. Solar has moulded ceiling beam and wall plates.
C14 fireplace and arch to former garderobe. This end of house has brick paving
to first floor - probably circa 1600. Roof of arch-braced collar form, with
wind-bracing. Kitchen of circa 1600 has large open fireplace, part built up.
A house of exceptional interest, retaining many mediaeval features. The
RCHM Survey does not fully interpret it.
