4/9 Horn Hill Tunnel

Tunnel Entrance. Dated 1832. Tablet with inscription over entrance: "The public
are permanently indebted for the erection of this TUNNEL to the zealous exertions of
GILES RUSSELL of Beaminster, GENT. Begun August 1831, finished June 1832. M. Lane,
Civil Engineer". Ashlar stone walls over and beside arch. Arch has rusticated jambs
with voussoirs and a dropped keystone. Flat imposts. Round string over tablet.
Parapets and return walls are stone-coped and return by curving down to square
terminal capped piers. Tunnel is 345 feet long.
