Farmhouse. Early C16, remodelled probably in early C17, and new farmhouse built in
late C19 backing on to the original range. Rear range rendered stone rubble and
cob. Slate roof with gable ends. Rendered stack at left gable end and tall rear
lateral hall stack with tapered cap heightened in brick. C19 range of unrendered
stone rubble with brick dressings. Hipped slate roof with lions head guttering.
Brick stacks to each end.
Original farmhouse range to rear of 3-room and cross-passage plan. Formerly open
hall house, with thick cob wall between hall and narrow inner room, the latter also
however apparently originally open to the roof. Thick cob wall partition to lower
side of cross-passage, the lower end possibly rebuilt in C17. In late C19 an
entirely new farmhouse was built backing onto the original range towards its right
(lower) end, of symmetrical 2-room and central stairhall plan. -
Front range has 3-window range. Symmetrical. All 4-paned sashes. Brick quoins and
cambered lintels with keystones. Cast iron porch with slender spiral twist
colonnettes supporting canopy bracketted with mythical beasts, with anthemion
acroteria and brattishing. 6-panelled door, the upper 3 panels glazed. The
projecting left end of the original range has 2 C19 2-light casements 6 panes per
light to upper storey.
Interior: Original range largely altered in C19 and C20. Chamfered axial beam to
hall. Hall and inner room fireplaces blocked in C20; both had bread ovens. Inner
room formerly had staircase to rear left-hand corner. C19 staircase inserted in
passage.
Roof structure consists of single raised cruck truss over hall, the feet not
visible, with 2 tiers of trenched purlins and diagonally set ridge purlins. Rafters
survive to rear side. Only the ridge survives to the inner room. All surviving
timbers over hall and inner room are thoroughly smoke-blackened. Single tier of
purlins only survives over lower end, with no sign of smoke-blackening. C19 joinery
intact to added front range.
