Whitebottom Farm

Farmhouse. Dated 1690 (lintel above main entrance). Coursed rubble sandstone;
slate gable-end roof with stone coping. Three-room range with rear wing containing
stair (forming a L-plan overall); the doorway appears to give in to a cross
passage with the stack backing onto the passage and heating the lower end (down-
house or kitchen): a somewhat unusual arrangement. Two storeys. 3-window front
range, each upper window under a stone coped gable with kneelers with evidence
for mullions (now removed). Hall and downhouse with 3+4 light mullioned windows
to ground floor, inner room (to left) with modern casement inserted. Right-hand
return with 3-light mullioned window to each floor (mullions removed from 1st
floor). Similar to rear face of wing (with mullions removed from 1st floor).
Casements inserted into early (perhaps original) window openings to rear of main
range. Low extension to left replaced by new storeyed extension (stone-clad)
under construction at time of survey visit (1989). Interior not inspected but
understood to contain a splat baluster staircase and other features.
