Threshing barn and stables/granary. Late C18 - early C19, for Carrington
Estate. Coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings, colourwashed, with
traces of incised pointing in imitation of ashlar. Gothick style. Forms
east side of stackyard. 2 storeys, 7 bays; stable/granary in 3 bays to
left. Barn entrance in 4th bay: full-height round-headed panel, partly
obscured by later C19 horse-engine house, has timber lintel with round-
headed panel above and blocked cart entrance below with inserted door.
Segmental-headed stable door in 2nd bay with small circular panel above
flanked by ogee-arched panels containing square windows. Similar ogee-
arched panels containing I-shaped breathers, mostly blocked, to threshing
barn section to right. Oval panels to first floor. All panels with brick
surrounds. Stepped and dentilled brick eaves cornice. Stone-coped gable to
right with shaped kneelers. Left gable end has ground floor ogee-arched
panel with blocked breather, blocked first floor opening and pedimented
gable with oval panel in tympanum and weathervane above. Interior: pegged
staggered butt purlin roof. An unusual and finely-detailed example of a
Gothick style farm building.
