Stable/dovecote. 1853 on datestone. Coursed limestone rubble with red brick
dressings, formerly colourwashed. Pantile roof. Rectangular plan. Front
to east, at right-angles to street. 2 storeys, 2 first floor openings;
symmetrical. rubble plinth, rounded brick quoins. Central plank half door
in segmental-arched brick surround flanked by single blank openings
(formerly glazed), with 3 small rectangluar ventilation slots and
2 circular iron tie-bar ends above. First floor has 2 boarded openings,
that to left with a row of 5 dove-holes. Stepped and dentilled brick eaves
cornice. Brick-edged gables with stone coping and shaped kneelers. Left
return, facing road, has pair of iron tie bar ends and blank first floor
opening with datestone above. Interior: first floor contains a full range
of tile-built nest boxes, each having an arched opening and narrow alighting
ledge in front. A good example of a type of dovecote construction once
common in Winteringham.
