Farmhouse and buildings to Burhopeside Hall (q.v.). Early C19 with alterations.
Coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; incorporating re-
used early C19 railway lines to support vehicle entrance. Welsh slate roof.
3 ranges round a courtyard. House on west range 2 storeys, 5 bays, with renewed
boarded door in plain stone surround; similar surrounds, some renewed, to
renewed 16-pane sashes on ground floor and 2-light horizontal sliding sashes on
first floor; inserted window in right bay of first floor has projecting stone
sill. Low-pitched hipped roof.
Left return range 2 storeys, 4 bays, the first bay part of the house; other
bays have Dutch doors on side facing yard, and flat lintels and sills to partly-
glazed stable and loft windows. Vehicle entrance in last bay supported on
railway lines said to have come from railway track laid in grounds by William
Hedley, the railway locomotive engineer who lived at Burnhopeside Hall and who
developed new types of line and engine. 2-storey, 5-bay east rear range has
plain stone surrounds to boarded doors in fourth bay and on first floor in
second bay, up to side stone steps.
