North Wing of Shockerwick Cottage
(Formerly listed as:
SHOCKERWICK LANE
Outbuilding, 5 yards to south west of
Upper Shockerwick Farmhouse)
GV II
A small mid to late C17 rural dwelling now forming the north wing of Shockerwick Cottage, built in local stone rubble with ashlar stone quoins and dressings and a pitched slate roof. The two storey building with attic has a rectangular plan with a single room on ground floor level, three rooms on the first floor arranged along a small landing, and an attic room.
EXTERIOR: The west elevation facing Shockerwick Lane has two and three light casement windows with ovolo moulded mullions under drip moulds to each floor, that in the centre replacing an earlier pitching door removed in the late 1980s (probably of C19 date when the building may have been used as an outbuilding to Upper Shockerwick Farmhouse, qv). The north elevation has mid- to late-C17 openings, all blocked, including a centrally positioned stone door surround with above and on either side, three two-light casement windows with ovolo moulded mullions under drip moulds. The south elevation, only partly visible, has a large external stack with a stone rubble base and stone ashlar shaft, flanked to the right by a mid- to late-C17 blocked single casement window with ovolo moulded jambs (the latter now only visible at floor level in the first floor bedroom to the front). The east elevation to the rear has a late-C20 two storey extension with attached conservatory, and these are not of special interest. The south wing of Shockerwick Cottage, which incorporates a former outbuilding with a two span roof but is ostensibly a late-C20 building, is also not of special interest.
INTERIOR: The interior contains a series of mid- to late-C17 features including, on the ground floor, a chamfered ceiling beam with run-out stops and a stone four-centred arch fire surround with mid- to late-C19 graffiti. And, on first floor level a blocked single casement with ovolo jambs at floor level (the one to the side of the external stack), and in the attic part of its original roof timbers have survived, including a large collar beam.
HISTORY: This former dwelling is historically associated with Upper Shockerwick Farm, a large farm complex which originates from the mid- to late-C17, with later alterations, which consists of an irregularly arranged group of farm buildings, clustered around the crossing of two country lanes.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
The north wing of Shockerwick Cottage, Shockerwick Lane, Bathford, merits designation on a national level for the following main reasons:
* The building is a good survival of a mid- to late-C17 rural dwelling containing good quality architectural detailing and internal features.
* The building forms a group with Upper Shockerwick Farmhouse (listed grade II), and its surrounding farm buildings which together form are a good example of a historic farm complex originating from the mid- to late-C17.
