House, former rectory. 1873-4 by John Usher (1822-1904) for Rev Thomas
Marlborough Berry. Yellow brick with stone dressings. Half-flipped clay tile
roofs. Double pile plan, with a gable to each elevation. 2 storeys and
attics. High Victorian Gothic style. Strong vertical emphasis offset by
horizontal bands of dark ochre brick. Variety of windows, mostly sashes with
2-centred arched heads, many paired. Moulded brick eaves cornice. Front
elevation: tiled gabled open porch with finial and decorative bargeboards. 2-
centred arched doorway with part glazed 6 panel door. One hipped dormer,
projecting forward on corbels, with paired sashes. Chimney stack to RH gable
has stone shield with 3 coronets. S elevation : similar windows and hipped
dormers. Rectangular projecting bay with pierced embattled parapet. Recessed
central bay had 2-centred head with alternating stone and brick voussoirs and
moulded dripstone. Contains paired lancet windows rising from ground to first
floor, and trefoil window between first floor and attic, all lighting
staircase. Variety of multiple chimney stacks.
