Clarendon School

Entrance lodge, formerly belonging to Hawnes, now Clarendon School. Built
1873 for the Rev. Lord John Thynne. Coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar
dressings. Clay tile roofs with decorative ridge cresting. L-plan, one
storey and attics. Windows mostly mullioned, some with cambered heads, many
set into pointed-arched recesses, mostly with decorative banding to heads.
Road gable has canted bay with tiled sloping roof. Lean-to porch within
angle. Stone band at first floor level has inscription to each elevation and
some foliate patterning: "JAYE BONNE CAUSE"; "LOYAL DEVOIR"; "FUTURUM
INVISIBLE"; "ANNO DOMINI MDCCCLXXXIII"; "DEO PATRIAE AMICIS". Gable ends
have pierced decorative bargeboards and unusual wrought iron finials in the
form of sunflower-like plants.
