Planned mews terrace. Mid-late C19. Stucco with stucco detail;
dry slate or asbestos slate roofs with slightly-projecting
eaves, the roofs of the end houses higher; stepped brick end
and axial stacks. Double-depth plan, Nos 5-8 each with 2 rooms
at the front and with a central entrance hall, No.8 with 1
room at the front and its entrance hall on the left.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement; Nos 5-7 each house with a
symmetrical 3-window front; No.8 with 2-window range. Probably
original horned sashes, those to ground floor, and doorways,
under segmental arches and within channelled rustication,
those to 1st floor with moulded architraves rising from
mid-floor strings except for central oriels on brackets to Nos
5-7 and with pilastered tripartite windows and moulded
entablature, and 2nd floor with similar string and single or
paired pilastered lights with keyed round arches.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls, boundary walls and
ramped walls flanking entrance bridges surmounted by
wrought-iron railings with arrow-head finials and with turned
stanchions with turned finials.
Included as part of an important planned group of terraces and
villas on the Hoe, a scheme which placed Plymouth in the
forefront of town planning in the early/mid C19.
