Officer's house at former Naval Hospital. c1765, designed by
Alexander Rovehead for the Navy Board. Plymouth limestone
rubble with limestone quoins, architraves, band above ground
floor and 1st-floor string to central bays; dry slate roofs on
3 levels: hipped ends except for taller central block with
mansard roof and large stone end stacks and 2 gabled dormers,
pediment with spoked lunette in front and parapet in front of
flanking roofs. Double-depth plan in 5 blocks with forward
breaks between blocks to projecting centre.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic pedimented central block
flanked by 2-storey blocks plus single-storey blocks at far
left and right, making symmetrical 1:3:3:3:1-window front.
Original or C19 hornless sashes with glazing bars to most
openings. Central pedimented block has central 1st-floor
Venetian window with spoked centre light and blind sidelights
and later enclosed rendered porch under with central window
and entrance to the side. The flanking blocks have central
wooden porches with fielded panels; moulded cornice and glazed
doors and sides; overlights with small panes behind.
INTERIOR: not inspected but known to have retained original
features.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: high rubble front garden walls with
ramped coping and also attached is part of the original
perimeter wall of the hospital designed to prevent the
patients from escaping.
HISTORY: shown in 1800 as the houses of the steward's clerk
and the agent's clerk.
Part of an outstanding and complete military hospital complex.
