Derelict pair of cottages
about 160 metres E NE
of Lower House

House subdivided into 2 cottages. Circa late C15 early C16,
hall floored in circa late C16 or early C17 and subdivided
into 2 cottages in C18/19. Timber-framed with wattle-and-daub
panels; weatherboarded and partly rebuilt in stone rubble.
Gable-ended roof clad in corrugated steel sheets.
PLAN: Surviving high end of a medieval hall house, comprising 1
bay of an open hall with parlour and solar to left (N)
separated by closed truss. In circa late C16 or early C17 hall
was floored and in the C18/19 the house was subdivided into 2
cottages, when axial partitions and stairs were inserted and a
stack was built into the west front wall.
EXTERIOR:2 storeys. S front is stone on ground floor and
weatherboarded above and has doorway to left and right. The
rear east has much exposed timber-framing with square panels
infilled with wattle-and-daub and with large tension brace on
right. S end stone ground floor, sheet steel above.
N end is weatherboarded above lean-to outshut. Cruck-trusses
partly exposed in both end gables.
INTERIOR: 2 bays, N bay is solar and parlour, S bay originally
open to roof. 3 full cruck trusses, centre truss closed;
centre and N truss with dovetail lapped collars; hall S truss
with curved braces to higher tenoned collar; trenched diagonal
ridgepiece; chamfered side purlins on backs of cruck blades;
common rafters mostly intact. S bay is smoke-blackened and has
inserted floor with deeply-chamfered axial beam with straight
stops and unchamfered joists. N bay (parlour) has large
chamfered axial joists, closely spaced. Remains of
shoulder-headed doorway in hall-parlour partition. Both rooms
have later axial partitions and staircases and a shared stone
lateral stack on the front west wall.
