Late C14 or early C15 house. Timber-framed and plastered on plastered red
brick ground floor. Grey slate roof. Two storeys. Half H-plan. Modern
casement windows throughout. Internally are 2 late C14 cinque-foiled stone
window heads. First floor has timber traceried windows now covered. Two
4 centred fireplaces at first level, one stone with shields of arms, and
one of plastered brick. Both circa 1600. Original frame and roof is virtually
complete. First floor hall, originally with barrel vaulted ceiling. Curved
scissor bracing, and moulded top plates. Wing at north end has simple crown
post roof. House occupied in early times by Le Brett family, then by Celli
family, leading merchants of the Staple, and finally by the Barrett family,
of whom Anne Barrett was mother of regicide Miles Corbett. Moated.
