7/7 Roding House

Hall house, late medieval, altered in C16, C17 and C18. Timber framed,
roughcast rendered with some weatherboarding,roofed with handmade red clay roofed with handmade red clay
tiles. 2-bay hall aligned approx. N-S, with original crosswing of 2 bays at
N end, C18 parlour crosswing at S end. Axial chimney stack at N end of hall
inserted in late C16. External chimney stacks on N wall of N crosswing and
on E wall of S crosswing. E extension from N crosswing, C18. Lean-to
conservatory to N, C20. 2 storeys with attic. W elevation, weatherboarded
dado, roughcast render above. 6-panel flush door, plain surround, one french
window, one C20 casement window. First floor one C20 casement window, one C18
window of 2 fixed lights and one wrought iron casement with leaded rectangular
panes, one late C18 double-hung sash window of 12 lights. One gabled dormer
with C20 casement window. S crosswing hipped at W only. S elevation (towards
Ongar Road), one double-hung sash window of 12 lights on each floor, late C18.
Some framing exposed internally. Inserted hearth in hall of 33 cm. brickwork
with carved mantel beam, foliate with Tudor rose at W end. Inserted floor in
hall consisting of axial beam with exposed joists of vertical section supported
on clamps on walls, early C17. Walls of hall raised by approx. 1.20 metres
in C17, roof rebuilt in clasped purlin form. N crosswing has blocked unglazed
window in N wall of upper floor with rebate for hinged shutter, blocked unglazed
window in W wall with groove for sliding shutters. Jowled posts, heavy
studding. Roof originally of crownpost construction, raised approx. 50 cm and
roof rebuilt. 2 C18 windows with wrought iron casements in addition to the
one already mentioned, both in E elevation at first floor level, one adapted
with wood.
