TQ 49 NW LOUGHTON TRAPS HILL,
1/33 Rose Farm
- II
Farmhouse, late C17, extended in C19 and C20. Timber-framed, weatherboarded,
roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay range aligned approx. E-W, with
2-bay W crosswing, forming a rectangular plan, with chimney stack at the
junction. Aspect S. Single storey lean-to extension to N, C19. 2-storey
extension of one bay to W, C19. Substantial brick extension to W and N, c.1960.
2 storeys. S elevation, plain door with window each side, 4 casement windows on
ground floor and 5 on first floor, all C20. The building now extends an equal
distance each side of the original W wing, producing an illusion of symmetry
from the S enhanced by the weatherboarding on the c.1960 extension. Originally
there was a lobby-entrance in front of the central chimney stack, now blocked to
form a window. Some framing exposed internally. Axial beam over ground floor
of E-W range, plain-chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. Large wood-burning
hearth reduced for C20 grate, original mantel beam exposed. External surfaces
at the rear which are not weatherboarded painted white; machine-made red clay
tiles on rear lean-to extension. - RCHM 4. -
