House. C18 and C19 front ranges, C16 or earlier rear range. Front ranges red
brick, rear range timber framed with plaster or red brick facing. Red plain
tiled roof. 3 red brick chimney stacks. Complex plan. C18 hipped roof rear
range, C19 forward gabled crosswing to right with single storey lean-to porch
attached to the C19 flat roofed stair turret. 2 storeys. 1:1:1 window range of
C18 small paned vertically sliding sashes to left and C19 sashes with glazing
bars to stair turret and left red brick 3 light bay. Squared pierced parapets
to stair turret and bay. To rear a C19 single storey laundry/dairy extension.
Interior features include stick staircase with moulded string to C18 range and
servants staircase. Original range with heavy stop chamfered bridging joist.
Heavy studding to rear wall probably late C15/early C16, C17 through bracing to
walls of brewhouse. Circa 1595 held by John Bullock before he moved to
Faulkbourne Hall, Witham. Oliver Cromwell "partook refreshment here". Later
owned by Lord Byron.
