738/7/165 DURNGATE STREET
08-MAY-75 (North side)
7
(Formerly listed as:
DUMGATE STREET
7)
II
House, C18, probably predating 1771.
MATERIALS: Stuccoed, with a pitched tile roof, and a high brick stack shared with No. 6 (qv).
PLAN: The plan of No. 7 Durngate Street - rectangular, but narrowing slightly to north - remains unchanged since the publication of the first OS map in 1889. Until 1902 at least, No.s 6 and 7 shared a rear courtyard.
EXTERIOR: The street frontage of this two-storey building is divided into three regular bays, containing two ranges of windows with 8/8 sash frames in moulded frames; a blind window sits above the centrally-placed front door at first-floor level. In the centre of the roof is a casement dormer window with hipped tile roof.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
HISTORY: Durngate Street lies at the centre of the town of Dorchester; the site has been occupied since Roman times. Durngate Street is shown as being almost completely built up on both sides in Hutchins's map of 1771; though the street also contains later buildings, No. 7 Durngate Street is thought to pre-date 1771.
REASON FOR DESIGNATION: 7 Durngate Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural: A well-preserved example of a modest, two-storey Dorchester house of the C18
* Group Value: With adjacent listed buildings, and with listed buildings elsewhere in Durngate Street
