l838, architect Mr Shepherd for Gordon estate. The only surviving villa of central
Bournemouth's earliest years, in this case more Grecian than Italianate. 2 storeys
and basement, 3 windows wide, white-painted brick with stucco dressings. Severe
rectilinear rhythm, vertically by giant pilasters to each bay, horizontally by
stringcourse to 1st floor and flat roof parapet over entablature. Central bay
on both floors recessed: tripartite porch with square piers, doorway with rectangular
fanlight, at head of 5 steps with iron handrail, loggia over, also tripartite
and with square piers, connected by pierced balustrade. Ground floor windows
to left and right also tripartite, divided by square piers, with a subsidiary
order of pilaster-mullions, panelled sill zone. Secondary doorway at east end
with rectangular fanlight framed by pilasters and entablature. Stucco balustrade
to basement area.
