Nos. 2, 3 and 4 (Merrifield)
(Formerly listed as Nos. 1, 2 and 3, Silverhill, MALBOROUGH GREEN)
GV.
II
Row of three cottages. Probably late C17-C18, built piecemeal, with later additions. Rendered rubble walls, possibly incorporating some cob. Hipped thatch roof. Rendered brick axial stack to No. 4 (to left) and similar at end of No. 3 (at centre) and No. 2 (to right).
Plan: No. 4 and No. 3 may have been one house, both now have two rooms and No. 3 also has a small wing behind which connects it with No. 2. No. 2 is basically a one-room plan with a C20 rear addition.
Exterior: two storeys. No. 4 to left has an asymmetrical one window front, two below, of P.V.C. late C20 windows with a doorway converted to a window left of centre. C20 glazed doorway in left-hand end wall. No. 3 adjoining it to the right has a two window front. To the left on each floor is a mid C20 metal-frame two-light casement. To right on first floor is a C19 two-light casement with a late C19 four-pane sash below. Small leanto and adjoining porch against right-hand end wall which has a C19 plank door behind a hep door. Wing extends to the rear and connects with No. 2 which extends to the right. This has two windows on the first floor and I below of C20 P.V.C. casements apart from single small-paned light on first floor to left. C20 stable-type door in end wall and single story C20 addition at the rear.
Interior: No. 2 only accessible at time of survey and exhibited few early features apart from a largely rebuilt fireplace and substantial, possibly original, principal rafters visible on the first floor, although roof space not inspected.
