Pair of attached estate cottages converted into one. Circa mid C19. Local
stone rubble. Asbestos slate roof with gabled ends, the right hand end
abutting Langham House (qv) (the former school) and the left had end has a
wooden finial and plain barge boards replacing the original decorative
bargeboards. Axial stack to right of centre with a red brick lozenge-shaped
shaft.
Plan: Pair of 1-room plan cottages sharing a central axial stack with back-
to-back fireplaces and with unheated service rooms in a single storey outshut
at the back. The left hand cottage was larger and its left hand gable end
wall is not at right angles to the front. The 2 cottages have been converted
into one house when the right hand front doorway as blocked and the eaves of
the rear outshuts raised.
Exterior: 1 storey and attic. Almost symmetrical 2-window range with
original 2-light casements with lozenge and diamond-shaped panes, cambered red
brick arches and slate sills; the first floor windows in small gables with
plain bargeboards, probably replacing ornate bargeboards. 2 doorways with
cambered red brick arches, the left hand doorway has a C19 plank door, the
right hand doorway has been blocked.
Similar first floor casement on the left hand gable and with a canted bay
window below with similarly glazed casements.
The stone rubble outshut at the back has raised eaves and the roof of the main
range is carried over to form a catslide; C20 casements in the outshut.
Interior not inspected but may retain its simple early C19 joinery.
Ashprington is the estate village of Sharpham House (qv) and one of this pair
of estate cottages is said to have once been used in connection with the
adjoining village school (Langham House (qv)).
