Farmhouse. Circa early to mid C17; possibly a remodelling of an earlier
house; extended in circa C18 and late C19. Slate rubble with dressed
slate front with chamfered slate plinth. Slate roof with gabled ends and
C19 crested ridge tiles. Large gable end stacks, the left heightened
in rendered brick, the right truncated.
Plan: 2-room plan, lower end to left, with central cross-passage; both
stair turret at front. There is another stair turret at the back of the
cross passage (and behind the right hand rooms) subsumed not a circa C18
rear wing. The wing has a lateral side stack but may have been
originally an unheated outbuilding with a loft. In late C19 another
smaller wing was built in the inner angle. The higher right hand rooms
of the main range has been subdivided.
Exterior: One storey and attic. Asymmetrical 2-window north east front.
2 small gables with late C19 or C20 shaped bargeboards either side of
projecting stone porch with C20 door. On left a large square stair tower
with small blocked window on right side. Late C19 and C20 2 and 3 light
casements with glazing bars, chamfered lintels and slate cills, the
ground floor left has slate hoodmould and C17 ovolo moulded and stepped
timber lintel. At rear gabled wing on left with half-blocked loading
door on first floor and smaller late C19 gabled wing on angle to right.
Interior: Lower left room has large fireplace with large hollow-
chamfered slate-on-edge lintel and replaced ceiling beams. Chamfered
cambered timber doorframe to newel stairs in front turret. Divided right
hand room has plastered over ceiling beam and blocked fireplace. At rear
of central cross-passage a wide newel stair with slate treads in rear
turret. First floor not inspected. Roof structure said to have been
replaced.
