Farmhouse.
C16 with early C18 wing and C20 extension. Granite rubble. Slate roof with gabled
and hipped ends. Roof at higher end is lower level. Two storeys. C19 and C20
casement windows. External chimneystack with set-offs, on front, to right of cross
passage doorway. Early C18 cross wing to left at lower end, with steeply pitched
hipped roof. This south-west wing is rendered rubble and has large truncated
chimneystack at the centre and has been extended at rear (north-west) in C10
(dated 1923).
Interior: The higher end may have been the hall, it is still single storey and has
gallery ( ) over the cross passage with reset staircase with turned
balusters, moulded handrail and closed string. Also in the hall is a small
shell-shaped granite bowl reset in the back wall - and said to be possibly a holy
water stoup. There is a squint from the lower room to the doorway.
The kitchen also at the lower end has a plain chamfered granite chimneypiece with flat
head. Hemerdon was a Domesday Manor. Reference: W G Hoskins A New Survey of
England-Devon", page 463.
